201 - The Height Challenged Munchkin

... After 2+ months of working at my terrific new job ... they ask me if I want to be a munchkin!! lol ... Apparently every year they have this special section in the newspaper (I work in the advertising dept. of a newspaper) where they do this big launch and there is a theme. Also apparently, this is the biggest launch yet where they performed a version of "The Wizard of Oz" except it was called the "Wizard of Adz" ... Here is the costume I came with for myself. There is video of the "play", but its private. :-P

Halloween Costumes for Couples and Groups

!±8± Halloween Costumes for Couples and Groups

Even more than candy and trick-or-treating, dressing up is an integral part of Halloween. Choosing the right costume can be a difficult proposition, never mind finding the right couple costume. Selecting a group costume can be even more troublesome.

Before you get down to the business of selecting your group or couple costumes, you have to find a costume source. The first place you can look is your local department or discount store. While their selection is sometimes limited, you may still be able to find the right costumes. Your best chance is to go early though. The closer it gets to Halloween, the more picked over the selection. If you have access to a Halloween specialty shop, or a costume shop, you may find a wider selection available.

Couple Costume Ideas

The easiest place to start with a couple costume is to consider famous duos. Here are just a few examples of male/female duos to get you started:

Adam and EveBonnie and ClydeJack and JillCinderella and Prince CharmingPharaoh and Cleopatra

Often fairy tales and movies can be excellent idea starters. One online costume provider offers a Ball and Chain costume.

For non gender-specific costume pairings, consider ideas such as:

Salt and PepperLock and KeyNut and Bolt
Group Costume Ideas

The larger your group, the more difficult it becomes to make a group costume decision. It also becomes more of a challenge to find enough costumes variations within a theme to accommodate the group. Online costume providers can be an invaluable resource when it comes to these types of volume purchases.

The easiest way to costume your group is to select a theme, with each member of the group having a slightly varied costume, perhaps based on gender or age.

For a larger group, around ten to twenty, a theme such as sea animals might work. Each group member selects a different sea creature, such as shark, fish, eel, lobster, etc. Another idea would be for each member to dress as a character from the Star Wars series of movies.

If you have a smaller group of people, one of the following group ideas may work for you:

Superheroes (Superman, Batman, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Batgirl, etc.)PiratesThe Wizard of Oz (Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, Munchkins, Glenda, etc.)

One online provider even offers group costumes based on cocktails and fast food.

No matter the size of your group, from two through twenty, with a little planning, you can find a Halloween costume theme that works for everyone in the group.

Top 10 Parenting Complaints

!±8± Top 10 Parenting Complaints

After 20 years as a parent educator - there's nothing I haven't heard and very little that surprises me. What interests and inspires me is how much we parents have in common with each other. And as a mom who raised 5, highly independent and self-sufficient kids and as a parent educator who has talked with hundreds of thousands of parents about life with their kids, I feel qualified to share this fun list of what I consider the "Top 10 Parenting Complaints" Enjoy.

10. Kids who push, hit, throw, kick and bite. What the heck? Don't they know what "use your words" means? Oh wait.... 9. Kids who say things like, stupid, shut up, idiot, dummy, butt-head. Yep, those would be the words. 8. Kids who can not, will not, and do not cooperate. To complicate matters, parents also expect the kids to cooperate willingly and with smiles on their faces. 7. Kids who ignore their parents. How dare those little munchkins completely ignore, walk away from, cover their ears or start to sing when we have something really, really, REALLY important to tell them again, and again, and again. 6. Kids who noodle, stall, get distracted and act like they don't have to be somewhere important. Like, yesterday. 5. Kids who think they no longer need naps. Can someone PLEASE explain to me why little kids won't sleep and teenagers will only sleep? 4. Kids who want to stay in the PJ's all day or wear the ballet costume to school for a week or refuse to wash their favorite pair of wind pants - ever. First impressions are important right? Even when they are 3 - right? After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression - right? 3. Kids who refuse to go along with your plans and try and keep you trapped at home all day long. Come on already. Look how damn nice it is outside. Let's go, let's go, let's go! 2. Kids who yell, manhandle, annoy, bother or wake up the new baby. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We want them involved with their new sibling, but what don't they understand about - BACK OFF?? 1. Kids who refuse to eat what we put in front of them, sleep when we want them to sleep or potty train when we are ready for them to be done with the diapering. Damn kids anyway.

When you boil it all down, this is the list of the most common parenting challenges. Just for fun, for the next 24 hours, when you are considering taking one of these small annoyances and turning it into a serious problem, that needs immediate attention, instead - take a breath, look into the eyes of your beloved child and ask yourself - is it really such a big challenge? And if the answer is no, then let it go. Just this once, let it go.

Actually, any type of event here is designed to benefit locals, but there are a few that stand out from the others. What are these? What do they offer? Here are a few of your better choices when it comes to local events.

Munchkin Masquerade

The entire city gets dressed up for the holiday, and you'll find costumes and plenty of holiday mirth all around. Each year, more than 2,000 children and their parents attend this great family event and trick or treat all through the Pear Street area.

Fall Festival

The Fall Festival held every year in downtown Boulder is one of the most heavily attended events of the year. You will find that it runs for three entire days, Friday through the end of Sunday. In addition, you will find that it features food and drink, local arts and crafts, fun games for the entire family, live music and more. Microbrew beer, vendor booths and even a children's carnival are available for visitors to enjoy for the entire weekend. There is simply no better way to welcome fall than by being at the Fall Fest in the heart of town.

Saint Nick on the Bricks

Another popular Boulder event is Saint Nick on the Bricks, held every Saturday from late November through the middle of December. This event gives kids the chance to visit with Santa Clause right here in the heart of Boulder, and gives parents a break from paying high prices for the visit (it's free). You can feel free to take pictures, too, so you can immortalize the moment for your little one forever.
